- W211676091 abstract "The explosion of books is overwhelming. R.R. Balker, publisher of Books in Print, has a statistical evaluation of this explosion: Between 1949-1950 there were 8,000 new titles published; in contrast, between 1979-1980, there were 70,000 published. In fact, almost 800,000 books are now available. Forty years ago this number was only 85,000, and as one looks to the future, this explosion of written knowledge can be expected to increase. Indeed, an estimated 21,000 book publishers are banking on it. As this growing semantic tide washes over educators and schools, it can have extensive consequences for teachers, administrators and students alike. For teachers and administrators, the deluge contains knowledge that may provide valuable guidance as they attempt to address pressing issues in education today. Remaining ignorant of such information only stimulates a continuing decay in the quality of education. And for students, failure to glean information from this expanding knowledge can only impede their occupational success long after formal schooling. Yet searching through this flood for applicable information can easily overwhelm an individual. The tendency is to scan only a portion of the available material, which results in missing or overlooking significant items. If, however, the information was in a more manageable format, people probably would conduct more searches and, thus, be better informed. For information Management The electronic media format of CD-ROM offers feasible relief for the problem of information management. One 5.25 CD can hold about the same amount of data as 270,000 pages of text. If an average book has 300 pages, this is equivalent to 900 volumes. Even more important than quantity of data is a CD-ROM's searchability. All references to any topic found in these books can be located in less than 30 seconds with search-and-retrieval software. And if too many references are found with the initial search, further refinement using delimiters provides an efficient distillation of the data. Recently the U.S. Navy put its Naval Ships' Technical Manual on CD-ROM. A Navy cruiser, stretching 12,664 feet and weighing 26 tons, must have this manual to maintain and operate its weapons systems. Although 113 CD-ROMs were required, the Navy found there were significant gains in data accuracy and user productivity.(2) Unfortunately educators have been slow to adopt this important information medium to keep abreast of research and critical thought in their respective fields. If they were properly trained in CD-ROM searches, they could substantially reduce the lead time required to get results out of the laboratory and into the classroom. The average classroom teacher often does not have the budget to subscribe to the variety of academic journals that publish results of current research projects. And even if they can afford the expense, the time to peruse these journals may very well preclude effective implementation in the classroom. Educators would also accrue other benefits if they were cognizant of CD-ROM's varied uses. Tanner and Bane have considered CD-ROM in an academic environment.1 They suggest educational applications and offer a list of companies currently providing titles of interest to a wide spectrum of educators. In Elementary, Secondary Schools The setting most often considered for CD-ROM applications is higher education, but both the elementary and secondary school environments can be significantly affected as well. For example, a major weakness of students at these learning levels is in library and research skills. This limits not only their immediate scholastic performance, but also has repercussions on their academic advancement throughout their higher-education experience. Also, for those who terminate their education before the tertiary, lack of expertise in such skills prevents them from staying on top of the knowledge explosion in both their work and leisure pursuits. …" @default.
