- W2116764845 abstract "Most of the papers in this special issue were presented in a topical session, Sediment-Hosted Lead-Zinc Deposits, during the 2001 Geological Society of America annual meeting in Boston. The purpose of this special issue is to raise awareness about the potential of nonsulfide zinc deposits as commercially attractive targets for the mineral industry and as timely research subjects for academia. The supergene variety alone currently accounts for approximately 10 percent of the world’s known Zn reserves (Borg, 2002).Although exploitation for nonsulfide zinc deposits, especially the supergene ores, began hundreds of years ago, there are several reasons why a new look at these deposits is warranted at the present time:1. They are attractive targets for industry because, compared with sulfide deposits, they characteristically lack Pb, S, and other deleterious elements, they offer low-energy recovery of zinc by the solvent extraction-electrowinning process, and they possess generally higher in situ economic value (Borg, 2002).2. A new, comprehensive, classification scheme of these deposits clarifies the relative geological attributes, genesis, and exploration strategies for these deposits. Moreover, three varieties of supergene and two varieties of hypogene nonsulfide zinc deposits have been proposed (Hitzman et al., 2003).3. Research on the supergene variety of nonsulfide zinc deposits is woefully out of date. The stability relationships of …" @default.
