- W2116788757 abstract "Accurate assessment of fluid needs in the high-risk patient and determination of appropriate volume therapy are often beset by difficulties. Factors influencing plasma volume during and after cardiac surgery are reviewed, as well as the choice of plasma volume expanders in this setting: crystalloids, blood products, and hydroxyathyl starch derivatives. The use of crystalloids and colloids as pump primes in cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and their effects on extravascular lung water are also considered. Clinical trials of the hydroxyethyl starch, hetastarch, for postoperative plasma volume expansion are summarized along with results of a prospective randomized trial comparing pentastarch, a low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch, with albumin after cardiac surgery." @default.
