- W2116791190 abstract "Abstract Experience from many years of measurements in urban areas in Sweden shows that highconcentrations of various air pollutant components occur not only in large cities but also insmall towns. One possible reason is variation in the local meteorological conditions causingpoor ventilation facilities.Some years ago IVL developed the so-called URBAN model, an empirical statistical calculationmethod for air quality assessment. The model has mainly been used as a screening method forestimating the general risk of exceeding different national standard values for air quality insmall and medium sized towns in Sweden.Based on the URBAN model the aims of this project have mainly been to:- provide a model for quantifying the general population exposure of different ambient airpollutants on a national level;- develop a tool useful for exposure assessment in epidemiological air pollution studies aswell as trend and prediction studies.However, this study has focused on NO 2 , a pollutant closely related to traffic emissions andhence to the exposure of air pollution in cities.This was achieved by reproducing the local meteorological variations in a new ventilation indexand a dispersion-adjusting constant as well as better temporal and spatial resolution of theparameters. The advanced numerical model, TAPM (The Air Pollution Model) was used toimprove the old ventilation factor by using the output parameters mixing height and wind-speedrespectively, for calculating new ventilation parameters with high time and spatial resolution (1month and 1x1 km (2x2 km for the northern inland)).
