- W2116894990 abstract "We welcome the opportunity provided by the Editors of the BJSW to debate the points raised by Burgess and her colleagues (2014, 7) and further clarify our paper (2014, 6). As we indicated in the original paper, its aim was first to generate a critical analysis of the recent changes in social work education in England, and second to support our analysis with documentary evidence in light of our concern that aspects of the social work education change processes were minimally underpinned by research. In this brief paper, we respond to the key points raised by Burgess et al. and, to enable clarity of cross-referencing, we use their subheadings. We also relate our comments to the two recently released national reports on social work education commissioned by the government in England (Croisdale-Appleby, 2014; Narey, 2014). Burgess et al. note ‘the very significant differences’ between the American and English contexts for social work education and, while a comparative analysis of the implications of the context would be illuminating, it was beyond the scope of our paper to explore these in any depth. However, it is interesting that, just as we examined the detail of the American Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) for our paper, it appears that the architects of the Professional Capability Framework (PCF) had also used the EPAS. It would seem that we share a view that there are sufficient similarities between social work education in both countries to enable a useful comparison. To recap briefly, the EPAS developed by the American Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) set the standards for qualifying social work education in the USA, as do the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency (SoPs) and the College of Social Work (TCSW) PCF in England. As is common practice in developing the EPAS, CSWE consulted very widely with its membership and social work programmes through numerous stages (over a seven-year period) on the development and refinement of the EPAS. For Burgess et al. to suggest the latter were developed ‘by academics with no formal external input’ is to misunderstand the degree of pro-active engagement of the American social work education community with all levels of practice. Social work agency practicum providers participate in a variety of ways with social work programmes and bring the perspectives of social work practitioners to the consultation and also many American educators continue to practise social work and interact with agencies through joint projects and research." @default.
