- W2117328404 abstract "I read with great interest the article by Colomba et al. [ [1] Colomba C. Saporito L. Polara V.F. Barone T. Corrao A. Titone L. Serological screening for Leishmania infantum in asymptomatic blood donors living in an endemic area (Sicily, Italy). Transfus Apheresis Sci. 2005; 33: 311-314 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (20) Google Scholar ]. Since transmission of Leishmania by transfusion is known to occur, it is appropriate to consider risk of transmission of Leishmania by blood donors residing in or who have traveled to an endemic country; however, the conclusion stated in the article, that the authors’ findings suggest that the risk of Leishmania infantum transmission by blood transfusion in Sicily is very low is not supported by the data presented. The authors compare their data which is the prevalence of antibody to Leishmania with two other studies which used blood culture and western blot [ [2] Le Fichoux Y. Quaranta J.F. Aufeuvre J.P. Lelievre A. Marty P. Suffia I. et al. Occurrence of Leishmania infantum parasitemia in asymptomatic blood donors living in an area of endemicity in southern France. J Clin Microbiol. 1999; 37: 1953-1957 PubMed Google Scholar ] or flow cytometry of buffy coat [ [3] Kyriakou D.S. Alexandrakis M.G. Passam F.H. Kourelis T.V. Foundouli P. Matalliotakis E. et al. If antibody were a reliable way to screen for Leishmania we would have a simple donor screen similar to that of other transfusion transmitted disease." @default.
