ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze differences in Professional Effectiveness and perceived job satisfaction in physicians based on certain characteristics of Hospital Emergency Department. Method: 84 ED physicians from eight public hospitals in Spain, completed the battery of questionnaires to assess the study variables (response rate: 71.8 %). Analyses were made with the statistical package SPSS where descriptive analyzes were performed, ANOVA and t - Student. Results: The physicians in the ED reported high demands and scarce resources both functional as buffers or resources for professional growth in their services. Scores on job satisfaction and perceptions of professional efficacy were also medium to low. On the other hand, the more satisfied professionals were those who had fewer demands related time off after a guard, and had more functional resources and dampers in their services. Conclusions: the existence of resources supporting the professional development of medical help to solve the problems that arise in the workplace. However these resources in turn can be perceived as an external control rather than as a tool for improving job satisfaction affecting the practitioner." @default.
