- W2118790104 abstract "Literary recitation—the practice of reading out a written work before an audience—was an important dimension of Kafka's experience as a writer. In addition to documented encounters with famous Rezitatoren and his well-known habit of reading works to friends and family, Kafka engaged with the practice of recitation in several diary entries from early 1912. Examining these reflections in their historical and literary contexts, this article demonstrates Kafka's profound discomfort with the power of recitation to reconfigure and indeed disturb the “proper” relationship between work, author, performer, and audience. At the same time, Kafka is seduced by the reciter's vocal powers, which can confer fame, recognition, and praise upon the reciter. Recitation is thus a hybrid acoustic form (much like Josefine's singing and the Yiddish of the traveling theater troupe) through which Kafka explores the problems and possibilities of vocal expression." @default.
