- W2119537089 abstract "Abstract INTRODUCTION THE increase of the amount of cholesterol in the blood serum of the cockerel during the administration of a diet containing high levels of cholesterol (Dauber and Katz, 1942) has been associated with the development of atherosclerosis (Dauber and Katz, 1943). It has been established that the laying hen does not develop atherosclerosis during the feeding of cholesterol as readily as the cockerel even though the blood serum from the laying hen does contain a high level of cholesterol (Stamler et al., 1955). The administration of estrogens to the cockerel was found to result in a rise in the amount of serum cholesterol and to increase resistance to the development of atherosclerosis during cholesterol feeding. Chicken blood serum proteins have been characterized by electrophoretic methods (Brandt et al., 1950; Heim and Schechtman, 1954), and laying hens and cockerels, injected with estrogens, exhibit similar electrophoretic blood serum protein patterns which differ…" @default.
