- W2119689904 abstract "This paper provides a brief description of a research project being conducted at Swinburne University of Technology that aims at maximising the content of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in hot mix asphalt (HMA). The first stage of this project involves conducting a series of laboratory mix designs and tests to build a database for a base case representing current Australian practice in designing recycled HMA with RAP. The aim of this study is to have a better understanding of the effects of increasing RAP content on the volumetric and mechanical properties of HMA. Based on the findings from this stage, another experimental program will be prepared in order to produce recycled mixes with high RAP contents (more than 20 per cent) and acceptable performance. Reported in this paper are some of the initial findings regarding the volumetric and mechanical properties of a size 14 mm wearing course mix, with 10, 20 and 30 per cent RAP. The results show that the volumetric properties and resilient moduli of the 10 and 20m per cent RAP recycled mixes comply with VicRoads specifications. The 30 per cent RAP recycled HMA does not meet the specification requirements; however it satisfies the durability criterion. Increasing RAP contents leads to lower voids in mineral aggregates and higher resilient moduli. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E220164." @default.
