- W2121384579 abstract "Hepatic cysts have a prevalence of 2.5%, and they are commonly asymptomatic but may be symptomatic as a result of pressure on adjacent organs. When cysts occur at the periphery of the liver, the Glisson capsule may be distended and cause pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms provide an indication for surgical excision or marsupialization. Guided gradual aspiration of the cyst followed by the injection of 95% ethanol or by instillation of sclerosing agents such as a tetracycline led to disappearance of cysts ( 1 Beker S, Beker B. Cysts of the liver. In Haubrich WS, Schaffne F, Berk JE. Bockus gastroenterology, 5th ed. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders, 1995;2393–2404. Google Scholar ). The therapeutic outcome should be evaluated by making inquires about relief of symptoms or measuring the size of cysts. Because symptoms relief is subjective and might overlap with symptoms from radiofrequency ablation, most authors have used cyst size or volume for obtaining objective data. We did not inquire about symptom relief, but patients with large cysts and fear for malignant change should be comfortable. Re: “Radiofrequency Ablation of Hepatic Cysts: Evaluation of Therapeutic Efficacy”Journal of Vascular and Interventional RadiologyVol. 25Issue 5PreviewWe read with interest the study by Kim et al (1) reporting on radiofrequency (RF) ablation of hepatic cysts. This elegant study showed that significant volume reduction could be achieved with percutaneous ablation in most cases. Results were significantly associated with the initial volume of the cyst, with large ones presenting with significantly lower volume reduction. Therefore, the authors concluded that RF ablation may be effective for the treatment of benign hepatic cysts and could be considered as an alternative to conventional sclerotherapy or surgery.
