- W2121813789 abstract "ABSTRACT Detailed correlations within the Lower to Middle Cambrian succession (Mount Clark, Mount Cap, Saline River and La Martre formations) of the Northern Interior Plains indicate the need to modify the existing stratigraphic framework. The most important modification is the choice of a consistent and stratigraphically significant base to the Saline River Formation. Correlation of this horizon indicates it is an unconformity. Within the Evaporite member of the Saline River Formation, basinwide, shale-rich horizons are used to divide it into three informal units. Several structural and/or paleotopographic elements divide the basin into a series of depressions and uplifts, the former acting as local depocentres and the latter as sills between the depressions. Early to Middle Cambrian deposition was in a semi-enclosed, epicontinental marine basin. Initial transgression resulted in the deposition of a variably thick blanket of marine sandstone (Mount Clark Formation) followed by lower energy deposition of clay- and carbonate-muds (Mount Cap Formation). Either uplift or sea-level drop resulted in the development of an unconformity at the end of Mount Cap deposition. Subsequent deposition of the Saline River Formation was dominated by more restricted marine conditions and the development of extensive evaporite deposits. Gas and condensate have been recovered from sandstone reservoirs in the Mount Clark Formation of the northern part of the basin, and bitumen is a common component of the Cambrian sandstones and along fractures in carbonate beds throughout the basin. Potential source rocks have been identified in very thin, Gloeocapsomorpha prisca-like alginite-rich layers from the lower Mount Cap Formation of the northern areas of subcrop. These potential source rocks indicate immature to mature levels of thermal alteration. Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary compressional structures, with underlying precursor structures in Proterozoic rocks, remain the primary exploration target in the Colville Hills area, but potential stratigraphic traps in the Mount Clark sandstone are a feasible alternative play type, especially updip closure against paleohighs. RESUME Des correlations de detail faites a l'interieur de la succession du Cambrien inferieur a moyen (formations de Mount Clark, de Mount Cap, de Saline River et de La Martre) des Plaines de l'Interieur du Nord indiquent qu'il est necessaire de modifier le cadre stratigraphique existant. Le choix d'une base consequente et stratigraphiquement significative pour la Formation de Saline River est la modification la plus importante. La correlation de cet horizon indique qu'il s'agit d'une discordance. Des horizons riches en shale et s'etendant a tout le bassin, sont utilises pour diviser le membre d'Evaporite de la Formation de Saline River en trois unites informelles. Plusieurs elements structuraux et/ou elements paleo-topographiques divisent le bassin en une serie de depressions et culminations, les premieres agissant comme point de sedimentation maximum et les autres agissant comme des sills entre les depressions. Le depot du Cambrien inferieur et moyen s'est fait dans un bassin semi-ferme, de mer epicontinentale. La transgression initiale a produit le depot d'une couverture plus ou moins epaisse de gres marins (Formation de Mount Clark) qui a ete suivi par le depot en milieu peu energetique de boues argileuses et carbonatees (Formation de Mount Cap). Le soulevement ou la baisse du niveau marin a donne lieu au developpement d'une discordance a la fin du depot du Mount Cap. Le depot subsequent de la Formation de Saline River a ete domine par des conditions marines restreintes et a produit le developpement de vastes etendues de depots d'evaporites. Du gaz et du condensat ont ete recuperes a partir de reservoirs de gres dans la Formation de Mount Clark dans la partie nord du bassin; le bitume est un composant commun des gres du Cambrien et se trouve aussi le long de fractures End_Page 445------------------------ dans des lits de carbonates a travers tout le bassin. Des roches sources potentielles ont ete identifiees dans les couches tres minces a simili-Gloeocapsomorpha prisca, riches en alginite, de la partie inferieur de la Formation de Mount Cap, des regions les plus au nord du sous-affleurement. Ces roches sources potentielles indiquent des niveaux immatures a matures d'alteration thermique. Les structures compressionnelles du Cretace tardif au Tertiaire precoce, associees a des structures precurseurs dans les roches du Proterozoique, demeurent les cibles primaires de l'exploration dans la region des collines Colville, mais des pieges stratigraphiques potentiels dans le gres de Mount Clark sont un type d'enjeu d'exploration alternatif praticable, particulierement dans les fermetures d'amont-pendage situees contre des paleo-culminations.
