- W2122783608 abstract "This chapter discusses the participation of all corticoid hormones required for lactation. It has long been established that adrenal cortical hormones, as well as prolactin, are essential for the maintenance of lactation. Research during the past few years seems to indicate that adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and the adrenal cortex play as active a role in initiating and maintaining lactation as done by prolactin itself. The role of the adrenal in galactopoiesis is of admitted importance, but opinions are at variance as to whether it is the gluco- or the mineral corticoids that are primarily involved. There is growing evidence that increased amounts of prolactin, corticotrophin, and adrenal cortical hormones are released at about the time of parturition, and they all serve to initiate lactation." @default.
