- W2123108849 abstract "Neuropsychological tests may be influenced by age, culture and education, generating a bias for the diagnosis of dementia. The BCB-Edu consists of seven tests that don't require the ability to read and write and has proved to be useful for the screening of dementia in individuals with low and high educational levels (Nitrini et al. 2004, 2007). However, the impact of functional literacy on the battery hasn't been studied yet. The ob jective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and of the BCB-Edu in nondemented individuals with different levels of literacy skills. Literacy skills were studied in 196 healthy individuals, aged between 51 to 91 years old, with the Short version of the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (S-TOFHLA). Subjects were assigned into one of the following groups according to the number of years of formal education: Group 1 (1-3 years), Group 2 (4-7 years), Group 3 (8-11 years) and Group 4 (more than 11 years). Within each group we compared the performance of individuals with normal literacy skills and those with impaired performance in the S-TOFHLA in the MMSE and BCB-Edu. Groups were matched regarding gender and age. As expected, we found fewer individuals with adequate literacy skills in the groups with lower education: Group 1 (6 out of 32); Group 2 (30 out of 62) and the opposite pattern in the groups with higher education: Group 3 (33 out of 49) and Group 4 (47 out of 52). No significant differences were detected between individuals with normal and impaired literacy skills in all subtests of BCB-Edu. However, individuals with adequate literacy skills in Groups 1,2 and 3 obtained significantly higher scores in the MMSE compared to individuals with inadequate and marginal literacy skills (P<0.05). The BCB-Edu seems an appropriate tool to be used in populations with heterogeneous educational backgrounds, due to its similar procedural applicability and validity regardless of educational level and literacy skill level. The MMSE must be adjusted both for education and literacy skills to be used with low-educated individuals." @default.
