- W2123449510 abstract "As we approach the year 2000, dietetics professionals will be working with persons with developmental disabilities in almost every facet of dietetics practice. This phenomenal change, which has occurred over the past 40 years, reflects the change in attitude toward this population. Whereas persons with developmental disabilities were previously excluded from normal existence, the current trend is toward inclusion in the mainstream population. No longer is the role of the dietitian limited to working in an institution for persons with developmental disabilities and/or mental retardation. Instead, societal change and legislation have brought persons with developmental disabilities into schools, day care, group homes, small residential facilities, health care, and industry. The American Dietetic Association has recognized the importance of providing nutrition services for this population with two position papers, one in this issue (see page 189) and one published in 1995 ( (1) Kozlowski B.W. Powell J.A. Position of The American Dietetic Association nutrition services for children with special health care needs. J Am Diet Assoc. 1995; 95: 809-812 Google Scholar ). As the position papers set the stage for the need for services, this commentary will address the role of the dietitian working in this specialty area." @default.
