- W2124113284 abstract "Much media attention has been drawn to the case in Chicago in which ED staff did not leave the emergency department to assist the victim of an assault and the person later died. Because of the publicity generated by this case, the management of the hospital at which I work is considering instituting a policy whereby emergency nurses are to respond to emergencies anywhere on campus, including the parking lot, surrounding area, and possibly even the small shopping mall across the street (we have received gunshot victims from this location). While I can empathize with the victims’ families, I do not believe that it should fall upon nurses to enter potentially dangerous situations for which we are not trained or adequately protected. Rule one of Basic Trauma Life Support is scene safety, and while our management states that we do not have to enter an unsafe scene, how can we be assured that any scene is safe, no matter how tranquil it looks? Paramedics, who are trained in field rescue, are not allowed to enter the scene of a gunshot or stabbing until the police have secured the scene, and now our hospital is expecting nurses, who have little or no field experience, to do this. I am writing this letter because I know that the institution in which I work cannot be the only one that is considering revising its policies in light of the situation at the Chicago hospital, and I am concerned for the safety of all emergency nurses. I am interested in ENA’s position on emergency nurses leaving the emergency department and entering an unsecured scene in an attempt to aid a person who is in distress. •J Emerg Nurs 1998;24:482-8.•Copyright © 1998 by the Emergency Nurses Association.•0099-1767/98/$5.00 + 0 18/64/94174" @default.
