Her general assumption is that aging is likely to change the inputs to motivational processing, rather than the very processes. Furthermore, agerelated differences in knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) may contribute to a decline in work motivation unless organizations counteract decline (e.g., via work conditions). In other words, if work conditions stay the same across work life, motivation will decline. Put still another way, workers passively respond to agerelated KSAO changes. This is where I depart from Kanfer. My central tenet is that workers use strategies of active motivational regulation, resulting in motivation increases under certain circumstances.
