• W2125320555 abstract "The principal structural feature of the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic is a low, narrow mountain range with a southeast-northwest trend, the Cordillera Oriental. It is flanked on its northern side by the alluvial deposits of a major river and by a discontinuous, narrow coastal plain; on its southern side it is flanked by a continuous and wide coastal plain that extends southeastward 20 miles beyond the end of the mountain range. The present and raised shorelines of the extensive plain south of the Cordillera are the subject of this paper. The coastal plain has an area of about 3,000 square miles, slightly than 10 per cent of the entire area of the country. Its easternmost point, just south of Cabo Engano, lies at 68° 20' West, while its western end lies near 70° 70' West, about 130 miles from Cabo Engano. East of Ciudad Trujillo for a distance of more than 50 miles the plain is between 20 and 25 miles wide. East of the longitude of El Seybo the mountain front turns to the south, the distance between the inner and outer boundaries of the plain decreases, and its simple rectangular outline becomes a more complex figure. Seen in a broad view from the fringing mountains, the flatness of the plain expresses strongly its marine origin (Figure 8); the former sea bottom stretches miles into the distance, inclined only slightly towards the sea, with interfluvial relief nowhere more than gentle undulations. Only the river valleys break the continuity of this flat surface, offering at many points above their steep sides spectacular views encompassing broad sweeps of terraced stream valleys, of the plain backed by mountains, and of the sea. The central third of the plain contains the principal sugar producing region of the country. The western third contains the most extensive savannas * of the island ,and a dense xerophytic forest covers the eastern third. The largest city of the Republic, Ciudad Trujillo, is situated near the southwestern corner of the plain. Of the other half dozen cities and towns of the plain only San Pedro de Macoris, a sugar port, is distinguished by la^ge size and prosperity. There is scarcely any rural population throughout the vast extent of the plain, except in the small densely populated area southwest of Ciudad Trujillo.
