- W2126331630 abstract "Our clinic is located between a state with an infertility insurance mandate that includes IVF and a state without any mandate. Our objective was to determine if IVF insurance coverage influences the number of children women have over time. Retrospective cohort. Medical and billing records were reviewed for women starting IVF in our center in 2001-2008. 1011 women were identified and grouped as having IVF insurance coverage(n=429), state-mandated IVF insurance coverage(n=249), or no IVF insurance coverage(n=333). Time to initiating IVF from first visit was compared among groups with Cox Regression while controlling for age at first visit. Number of children born through IVF was compared with Poisson Regression controlling for age at first cycle, diagnosis, history of live birth, consent to embryo cryopreservation, and days between first visit and end of the data collection period. Total number of children (IVF and non-IVF) was also compared with Poisson Regression. No differences were seen between women with state-mandated and non-state mandated IVF coverage. These groups were combined as having IVF insurance coverage (IC) and compared to women without coverage (WOC). Women with IC initiated IVF sooner than women WOC (HR 1.2, 95%CI 1.05-1.3). Women WOC had fewer children from IVF when compared to women with IC(B=-0.2,P=0.03). This observation held after controlling for variables listed above(B=-0.13,P=0.01). Older age at first IVF cycle was independently associated with having fewer children through IVF(B=-0.04,P=0.01). Having a multiple gestation pregnancy was associated with having more(B=1.2,P=0.01). In addition to having fewer children through IVF, women WOC also had fewer total children than women with IC(B=-0.1,P=0.02). For women who require IVF, lack of IVF insurance coverage limits the number of children they will have. IVF coverage is an important policy issue requiring attention of state legislatures and providers of employee health benefits." @default.
