- W2127239078 abstract "Emotional content and contraceptive behavior vary among different types of adolescent sexual relationships. Little is known about how these variables change over time. We examined emotional predictors of relationship status change and contraceptive behavior. Women (N = 387, 14-17 yrs at enrollment) were recruited from primary care clinics as part of a larger study of STI, and provided quarterly partner specific emotional and behavioral information. Emotional variables were relationship status (7-pt Likert type scale), relationship quality ([RQ] 5 items, range, 5-25, α = 0.92), relationship satisfaction ([RS] 5 items, range 5-35, α = 0.93), sexual satisfaction ([SS] 5 items, range, 5-35, α = 0.95), and single 5-pt items on commitment to partner[PC] and being “in love” with partner[IL]. Behavioral variables were coital frequency, condom use at last coitus, and proportion of condom-protected events. Other variables were relationship status change from last visit ([RSC] no/yes) and quality of change (less/more serious). Models controlled for prior quarter RQ, RS, SS, PC, IL, coital frequency, and condom use. Structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood estimation, in AMOS 5.0, assessed direct and indirect associations of emotional variables with RSC, quality of change, and behavioral variables. All effects were significant at p < 0.05. Participants contributed 3983 quarterly visits. The most common relationship status was “boyfriend” (45.2%: 2,187/3,983). RSC occurred in 18% of visits (739/3,983), with 48.2% (356/739) becoming more serious; the most common promotion was from “good friend” to “boyfriend” (108/356). Higher SS (B = 0.194), lower RS (B = -0.301) and lower PC (B = -0.122) predicted RSC; among those who changed, higher IL (B = 0.347) was associated with becoming more serious. Relationship status stability (no RSC) was associated with using hormonal contraception (B = 0.053), higher coital frequency (B = 0.182), no condom use at last coitus (B = -0.230), and lower proportion of condom protected events (B = -0.155). RSC predicted not using hormonal contraception (B = -0.085), lower coital frequency (B = -0.086) and condom use at last coitus (B = 0.060). Becoming more serious was associated with higher coital frequency (B = 0.447) and no condom use at last coitus (B = -0.218). Fit indices indicate excellent fit to all models. The emotional content of adolescent sexual relationships predicts future relationship status, sexual and contraceptive behavior. Being “in love” predicts increasing relationship seriousness, higher coital frequency, and lower condom use. Understanding the emotional content of and feelings of love in adolescent relationships may allow clinicians to anticipate behavioral changes and tailor clinical interventions to minimize future STI risk." @default.
