- W2128195835 abstract "The full potential of the cloze procedure can be determined only by continuous research, for the more knowledge gained about this technique the more promising will be the chances of determining its complete effectiveness. Since the procedure was developed primarily as a readability technique most research has focused upon this aspect of the use of the cloze. However, recently the procedure has received increasing attention as a possible technique appropriate to the teaching of reading. Rankin (1957) pointed out that from the standpoint of the classroom teacher the cloze procedure was an instrument with many practical uses. Its ease of construction and objectivity of scoring have been supported by studies of methodology. Bloomer (1962) constructed cloze exercises based upon elementary school reading material at various -grade levels and presented them to an experimental group of college students. He found that the gains made by the experimental group were significantly greater than gains made by the control group in comprehension, while the control group showed a significant decrease in comprehension. Coleman (1962) employed the cloze and investigated the effect of shortening sentences on comprehension. He used three versions of varying sentence length of three rather difficult prose passages administered to nine groups. Significant comprehension improve-" @default.
