- W2129296470 abstract "Summary Dry matter production of three grassland types receiving five repeated clipping treatments was determined in grazed and ungrazed plots. The three study areas varied in grazing pressures, decreasing with increasing distance from the shores of Kazinga Channel and Lakes Edward and George. Repeated clipping resulted in the reduction of dry matter production and the life span of the plants. Yield declined with the decreasing distance from the shores of the hippo-populated waters. Sporobolus pyramidalis and the less palatable species were more resistant to the effects of the repeated clipping than the palatable species. Selective clipping resulted in a more rapid rate of reducing production and placed the species at competitive disadvantage with the unclipped congeners. Plants in quadrats receiving total clipping lived longer and produced more dry matter than those receiving repeated selective clipping. It is concluded that close clipping (simulating heavy grazing) was responsible in creating and maintaining the Sporobolus and mosaic grassland types in Rwenzori National Park. Repeated clipping at 7 days interval is able to kill the undesirable lmperata cylindrica and Cymbopogon afronardus. Fire and grazing were found to promote development of moderate vegetation cover in which the palatable species came to dominance. RÉSUMEÉ Dans des quadrats broutés et non broutés, on a déterminé la production de matières sèche de trois types de savane tondues à cinq reprises successives. Les trois zones d'étude différaient en intensité de broutage; celui-ci étant d'autant moins fort que la distance aux berges du Kazinga Channel, des lacs Edouard et Georges est grande. Les conséquences des tontes successives fut la réduction de production de matière sèche et celle de la durée de vie des plantes. Le rendement décroit avec la proximité des eaux peuplées d'hippopotames. Le Sporobolus pyramidalis et les espèces moins tendres sont plus résistantes aux effets des tontes successives que les espèces tendres. Une tonte sélective entraǐne une réduction plus rapide de la production et place l'espèce en compétition désavantageuse avec ses congénères non coupés. Les plantes des quadrats recevant une tonte compléte vivent plus longtemps et produisent plus de matière sèche que celles qui subissent une tonte sélective répetée. On en conclut que ces tontes (simulant un broutage intensif) sont responsables de la creation et du maintien des types de savanes à Sporobolus et à mosaïques au Rwenzori N.P. Des tontes répétées a 7 jours d'intervalle sont capables d'eliminer les indésirables lmperata cylindrica et Cymbopogon afronardus. On a noté que le feu et le broutage entrainaient le développement d'une couverture végétale modérée dans laquelle les espèces tendres deviennent prépondérantes." @default.
