- W2129376035 abstract "Abstract Miniaturized 137 Cs sources make possible the treatment of cancer of the uterus, both cervical and endometrial, with a high degree of radiation safety by afterloading techniques. The basic unit consists of: a source holder which is a 30 cm long stainless wire tubing, 18 gauge in size, containing the 137 Cs within its lumen at one end, a handle at the other; a wire of the same length without the cesium; and a thin, plastic, hollow tube, also of the same length with a lumen fhich accommodates either steel wire. The plastic tube can be incorporated into almost any utero-vaginal applicator. The applicator is used with the dummy wire for handling, sterilization, insertion into the patient, and X-ray studies. Afterloading is accomplished by exchange of the dummy wires for the cesium holders which are stored in a lead safe. The strength of the cesium sources is the equivalent of 10 mg of radium in 1 cm of active length. The miniaturized cesium system can be adapted to most of the well established methods of intracavitary radiation therapy with the radiation safety of afterloading. Furthermore, with the dummy wires in place, the applicators can be adjusted in position in the patient with greater precision to correct errors of dosage revealed by preliminary calculations, and the time for insertion and removal of the sources can be more easily controlled." @default.
