- W2129452008 abstract "Histogram Analysis in Radiation Therapy (HART) is an efficient and an accurate plan analysis tool in radiation therapy treatments. Several applications of the HART program have been presented previously (J Appl Clin Med Phys 11(1), p.137-157, (2010); Med. Phys. 38 (6), p. 3680 (2011); Med Phys 39(6), p.3836 (2012); and Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 84(3), p.S812-S813 (2012)).The program has been continuously developed and improved in order to make it compatible with different types of commercial treatment planning systems (TPSs), to offer new plan analysis features, and to support various types of research and treatment applications in radiation therapy. The main objective of this work was to review and update the important applications of the HART program. Codes were primarily designed to read and write HART format using the standard Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and Digital Image Communication in Radiation Therapy (DICOM-RT) data objects of the radiation therapy plans exported from different TPSs in IMRT, Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), gamma radiosurgery, robotic radiosurgery, and tomotherapy at 7 different institutions. The HART format employed an optimal polynomial fitting technique to compute the 3D coordinates of the contours in 1 mm resolution of the regions-of-interest (ROIs) in the plans. In addition, an effective and a precise mechanism were also implemented to record primary dose grid information of the corresponding ROIs. The format was also customized for the (a) rapid and precise extraction of the cumulative dose-volume histograms (DVHs) and space-time DVHs (x-,y-, z-, and t-DVHs respectively) statistics, (b) universal-plan indices evaluation, (c) radiobiological modeling (RBM) and dose-response modeling (DRM) of the organs, and (d) physical parameterization modules. The fundamental DVH statistics were validated using the primary DVH statistics extracted from the commercial TPSs at various institutions. HART offers multi-dimensional DVH computational functionalities, several treatment plan evaluation techniques, empirical RBM outcome analysis modules, and essential simulations in a user-friendly software package. The cumulative and space-time DVH analyses, and RBM modules were found to be the most effective and useful features in several clinical trial studies in radiation oncology. HART is a universal and effective plan analysis tool in the radiation therapy treatments. We further expect to develop HART program for proton therapy treatment applications. The software is also available freely online (http://HART.research.uic.edu/) with the pro-bono technical supports and services to the radiation oncology community." @default.
