- W2129604801 abstract "Group cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBT) became, last decade, the intervention of choice in terms of efficacy, cost/benefit balance and feasibility in Alzheimer disease's (AD) family caregivers. There are mainly based on psycho-education and problem solving sessions. However, clinically, the benefit of CBT remains weak in about 25% of the caregivers. Losada et al (2004) has shown that new programs including sessions on exploration and modification of dysfunctional thoughts (DT) about care were improving efficacy of CBT, particularly in lowering the level of depressive symptoms. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between DT about care and caregiver's characteristics. A total of 32 AD's family caregivers participating in a group CBT program in the department of neurology of Salpêtrière hospital in Paris were assessed on the level of DT with the Losada Dysfunctional Thoughts about Caregiving Questionnaire. Age, sex, anxiety (STAI), depression (MADRS), burden (Zarit) and perceived stress (PSS) were also recorded. Levels of anxiety, depression, burden and perceived stress were found high in AD caregivers. No correlations between these clinical dimensions and DT were found. By contrast, significant positive correlations were found between DT questionnaire score and caregivers' age (p<.001). The presence of Dysfunctional thoughts such as “Nobody can care of my husband/wife/father/mother better than me” is an important factor of failure of AD carers programs in helping them to cope psychologically with the situation. The study showed that age but not carers' psychological state (depression, anxiety, stress, burden) is highly predictive of DT. This must be taken into account in the management of psycho-social interventions for AD carers." @default.
