- W2130254326 abstract "Investment castings were shown to be a good approach for making the titanium inlet duct for a high speed missile. Alternate approaches using wrought material c ost more due to the complex inlet shape and weigh more due to inability to tailor wall thicknesses. Subsequent development of this approach, using the segmented mold process, was conducted under contract to the Air Force Materials Laboratory. Different mold coatings were evaluated; tension, fatigue, and creep strength of cast titanium were determined; and dimensionally accurate, large, thin-walled parts representative of a missile inlet were cast. Several m old coatings were found to be acceptable and to have little effect on the cast titanium material p roperties. Tensile, fatigue, and creep properties were lower t han t hose for wrought material but were generally in line with what was expected. Subscale inlet parts were successfully cast with minimal distortion. Results confirm that the segmented mold investment casting process is a viable method to make titanium inlet ducts." @default.
