- W2130261010 abstract "Oral NSAIDs are used widely as symptomatic treatment to relieve the pain, inflammation and stiffness associated with rheumatic diseases and other inflammatory disorders of the musculoskeletal system. However, oral NSAIDs have systemic side effects, which vary in intensity, frequency and severity. Gastro-intestinal side effects may be troublesome, varying from mild discomfort, nausea and diarrhoea to more serious bleeding and even peptic ulceration. Other side effects include hypersensitivity reactions, headache, dizziness, tinnitus, blood disorders and fluid retention. Rarely, reversible acute renal failure may be provoked, especially in patients with preexisting renal impairment. In severe chronic rheumatic conditions the benefits of therapy may well outweigh the associated risks, but for acute, localised, inflammatory disorders of soft-tissues, tendons, joints and muscles the risks may not be justified. Topical therapy with NSAIDs, therefore, represents an attractive alternative for several reasons: 1. The NSAID is applied direct to the painful area avoiding gastro-intestinal toxicity." @default.
