- W2130302489 abstract "Signals, Switches, Regulons and Cascades: Control of Bacterial Gene Expression Hodgson, D. A., and Thomas, C. M. (eds); Cambridge University Press, 2002, 294 pp., ISBN 0521-81388-3, $120. This volume contains the papers that were presented at the 61st Symposium of the Society for General Microbiology held in April 2002. It is a pleasure to be able to read a symposium volume that is published while the material is still current. The 15 chapters present a wide variety of topics, some general and some specific, relating to the overall subject of the symposium. Microbial reaction to environment: bacterial stress responses revisited in the genomic-proteomic era. Gene variation and gene regulation in bacterial pathogenesis. DNA topology and regulation of bacterial gene expression. DNA rearrangements and regulation of gene expression. Structures of multisubunit DNA-dependent RNA polymerases. The ECF sigma factors of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). Secrets of bacterial transcription initiation taught by the Escherichia coli FNR protein. What can be learned from the LacR family of Escherichia coli? Regulation of the L-arabinose operon in Escherichia coli. Transcription termination control in bacteria. Antisense RNAs in programmed cell death. Control of signal transduction in the sporulation phosphorelay. A stranglehold on a transcriptional activator by its partner regulatory protein—the case of the NifL-NifA two-component regulatory system. Is anybody here? Cooperative bacterial gene regulation via peptide signals between Gram-positive bacteria. Quorum sensing in Gram-negative bacteria: global regulons controlled by cell density-dependent chemical sensing. The authors of each chapter provide sufficient historical background and references to place the topic in context. There are presentations on the current thinking on each topic as well as discussion of unanswered questions and a sense of where the field is going or needs to go. There is excellent use of color in figures in many of the chapters. Some of the black-and-white figures simply do not provide the clarity of color. Overall this is a most worthwhile volume that belongs on the shelf of anyone working in the field." @default.
