- W2130888155 abstract "The effects of whole body X irradiation upon the diffuse activity of rats, guinea pigs and hamsters were measured with spring-suspension activity units. Activity of all three species was depressed. The maximum depression in the activity of surviving rats occurred during the first three days. Survivors of a mid-lethal dose exhibited a second decrease in activity during the third and fourth weeks. Beginning in the second week, decedents of the mid-lethal dose underwent a second decrease in activity from which there was no recovery. The decedents of a supralethal dose exhibited no recovery from the initial depression. Activity of guinea pig survivors and decedents exposed to a mid-lethal dose was decreased on the first day. A second and more pronounced depression occurred which began in the second week. Decedents exhibited no recovery from this decrement. Activity of hamsters was depressed on the first day and again during the second week after a high sublethal dose. Thus, the rat, which shows severe signs of both gastrointestinal and hematopoietic injury, exhibits two marked depressions in activity provided the X-ray dose is sufficiently great and provided it lives long enough. The guinea pig and the hamster, which have been shown to exhibit minor gastrointestinal symptoms but a marked hematopoietic injury, manifest a more transient initial activity response followed by a marked depression in activity. It appears that the initial decrement in activity is associated with gastrointestinal dysfunction while the second decrement is associated with hematopoietic injury." @default.
