The secondary structure-stabilizing effects of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding were investigated. Comparison of the extent of folded hairpin population in non-competitive, polar aprotic, and polar protic solvents illustrates the critical role of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on hairpin stability.
