- W2132162575 abstract "A41though studies on the inheritance of panicle shape of coinmon oats, Avenrr srrtivn L., date back 50 years relatively little information has been published in the last 35 years. T w o distinct panicle types are recognized, nan~ely, equilateral (tree) and unilateral (side). In general, reports have indicated that oat varieties nlav differ in the number of loci involved in the inheritance of this characteristic, sonle having only one while others may have two or three. Nilsson-Ehle ( 1909) found the open type to be donlinant and panicle expression ~ffected by one to three loci in different crosses. Dominance of the open type was simil~rly reported by Garber ( 192 2 ) , Quisenberry ( 1926) and Coffman (1961). Norton (1907), Gaines (1917) and Odland (i928) observed an intermediate expression of panicle shape in thc F, plants from crosses between open and side tvDes. i l Recently, in the program to produce a monosomic series in the variety Garry at th-is institution, one line was found in a7hich the monoso~nics and nulliso~nics exhibit a typical appearance. This character is an excellent marlter and subsequently the chromosoine responsible for this condition was identified. The results -of the cytogenetic studies conducted on this line arc presented in this paper. Materials and Methods Seventeen monosomic plants werc obtained spontaneously in foundation lines of thc variety Garry from screening a large population byeroot-tip analysis (i/lcGinnis, 1962). Anlong the n~onoso~nic progeny of one of these (in foundation line 18 and designated 18-81) were ~ l a n t s wl~<ch exhibited the side-oat U 1 panicle. Such plants when selfed produced ~nonosomics and ~lulliso~l~ics which I always had the unilateral panicle. A ltaryotype analysis was conducted on Feulgen stained mitotic chromosomes which had been pre-treated for 2 1 hours in ice-chilled water. Enlarged photomicrographs of well spread plates were utilized in the identification. The chromoson~es w e cut out, matched and grouped according to the standard idiogram proposcd bv Rajhathy (1963). '4 total of 10 different cells were critically studied in tliis Tvay. *" @default.
