- W213300055 abstract "The kinetic and thermodynamic properties of the terrace-ledge-kink model of surface structure are developed and compared with measurements of the surface self-diffusion coefficient (Ds) and the crystaliographic anisotropy of the surface energy-(γ) of metals. Evidence is presented to show that the temperature dependence of Ds for fee metals can be understood in terms of two mechanisms, one dominant at high temperatures and the other taking over at low temperatures. Theoretical considerations suggest that the high temperature mechanism is associated with adatom migration while the low temperature mechanism may be due to surface vacancies. It is shown that the main features of the experimental γ-plots of metals are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of the terrace-ledge-kink model. Faceting of a metal surface due to adsorption of oxygen or sulphur can be explained theoretically in terms of alterations in the shape of the γ-plot resulting from adsorption on terraces or steps." @default.
