- W2133021992 abstract "In Yonne department (150 km southeast of Paris, France), nitrate content increased sharply in many catchments in 1969-1970 (Figures 1 and 2), irrespective of the geological substratum (Figure 3 and 4) or agricultural production system. To explain this increase, we examined variations in land use and agricultural practices on the basis of data for three areas (Figure 5), obtained mostly from government services for the department and through surveys undertaken in more limited areas by our own research team.In the late sixties (Figures 6, 7 and 8), farmers cleared some woodland areas, began ploughing grasslands and reduced legume and temporary pastures for the purposes of maize cultivation, especially on shallow permeable soils with irregular yields. They also altered the management of mineral N fertilization, i.e. no longer taking manure applications and soil nitrogen content into account. These changes, which provide a relatively accurate indication of nitrate increases in catchments (Figure 9), were the result of some major technical innovations along with concomitant changes in agricultural policies and farming structures (Figure 10). Over the last 20 years, maize has been partially replaced by peas and sunflower, and grasslands are still being ploughed under.All causes of pollution cannot be identified at any single scale because of differences in data availability or the cost of obtaining them. Furthermore, a cause which might seem crucial on one scale may be very minor on another. There is thus a high risk of error if single-scale assessments are conducted." @default.
