- W2133103686 abstract "An emerging priority for rehabilitation psychologists is understanding the special and circumstances of women clients, including the of minority women. An alyses of epidemiological data for interaction effects of sex and race that would facilitate needed understanding are scarce. This article begins to rectify the situation by providing a brief profile of women's utilization of outpatient psychiatric services; population characteristics that have special implications for rehabilitation psychologists, including race, age, marital status, diagnosis, and type of treatment, are identified. Sources of knowledge about the mental health of women and minorities are also identified. The President's Commission on Mental Health (PCMH) has pointed out that because of age, sex, race, and cultural background, or the nature of their disability, far too many Americans do not have access to personnel trained to respond to their special needs (President's Commission on Mental Health, 1978, p.2). The concerns of the PCMH for the of special populations, including women and minorities, both stimulated and reflected the emer gence of new knowledge about the impact of sociocultural factors on patterns of mental disability (Carmen, Russo, & Miller, 1981; Russo & VandenBos, 1981; Sobel & Russo, 1981). Since the goal of rehabilitation psychologists is to enable the physically or mentally disabled person to assume his or her fullest possible function in society, this new knowledge becomes particularly significant. Thus, rehabili tation psychologists are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of understanding the special and circumstances of women clients (Perl- man & Arneson, 1982). Included in this awareness is the recognition that effectively assisting women in their rehabilitation requires consideration of the interaction of dis ability, sex, and race as these variables relate to rehabilitation goals (Atkins, 1982). In this regard, the report of the PCMH's Task Panel on Special Populations is of particular relevance. It highlights the impact of prejudice, sexism and racism, discrimination, cultural and language barriers, low in-" @default.
