- W2133647589 abstract "Space vehicles returning to earth or entering the atmosphere of a celestial body are exposed to high aerodynamic drag due to their high entry velocities. This leads to a bow shock front and therefore to high temperatures in front of the vehicle. So, in addition to the pure aerodynamic heating due to skin friction effects, heat transfer to the surface of the body is increased by recombination effects and/or by the NO formation of the dissociated and ionized particles existing behind the shock front. For frozen flow or even nonequilibrium conditions occurring at such entry manoeuvres, the heat transfer to the walls of the space vehicle depends strongly on catalytic effects. Therefore, extensive investigations concerning the catalytic efficiency of different materials have been made in the past and are still in progress. In this paper results of measurements are presented and discussed which were achieved by combining optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. With this experimental setup it is possible to measure changes of plasma composition in the boundary layer in front of the mass spectrometer inlet system and relate this to the plasma composition detected by mass spectrometry. The results show that with plane inlet systems the plasma composition in the boundary layer is significantly influenced by the catalytic efficieny of the used coating. Furthmore it is shown that disturbance of the mass spectrometer results by boundary layer effects can be reduced by using a conical inlet system" @default.
