- W2134679733 abstract "Nothing more striking can be said of the victory of the Labour Party in the general election of July, 1945 than that it was a surprise to the Labour Party itself. The Conservative machine may have had intimations of defeat, but the Labour organizers, if hopeful, seem not to have pooled their hopes. Within the context of English history 1945 was a parliamentary victory similar to that of 1906, when an out-worn and reactionary Tory government, though led by a great political figure, had dissolved and finally fell. No more than in 1906 does a parliamentary revolution guarantee an economic and social revolution, nor on the other hand need the privileged classes of an older regime shudder too vigorously. But the scene is set for change. The reasons given for the defeat of the Conservative Party, for the government of care-takers was Conservative, are chiefly three. The first Conservative weakness lay in the fact that their appeal was almost entirely an appeal to keep Mr. Qhurchill in power. He campaigned vigorously himself on this one-plank platform, but his followers were even more vigorous. The answer offered by the opposition was simple and astonishingly effective: they said that perhaps the very fact that Mr. Churchill was so good a war leader would make him a poor leader for days of peace and reconstruction. The second factor that worked against the Conservatives was the low esteem in which so many of Mr. Churchill's closest supporters were held by *the electorate. Lord Beaverbrook and Mr. Brendan Bracken were most conspicuous in a list of ardent Churchill admirers who wounded their leader badly every time they spoke in his favor or publicly associated themselves with him. The palace guard, so attractively mysterious during the war, was mysterious and attractive no longer. The third and perhaps the greatest reason for the success" @default.
