- W2135477588 abstract "Yet again, attend a conference where the staple diet consist of the most eminent specialists in the field presenting cutting edge research with a clinical emphasis! Not only that, but the organizing committee has planned schools and patient programs. For maximum interaction, there will be a combination of sessions presenting the utmost in opportunity to discuss and network. From its inception, Excellence in Rheumatology has recognized the importance of patient feedback to achieve the best possible therapeutic outcomes. In Madrid, there will be two half-days dedicated to the patient and patient–doctor relationships for mutual learning. A comprehensive generic section will be balanced with two distinctive parts focusing on issues related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This program has been specifically designed by patients for patients with input from two of the most influential patient support groups in Europe – the UK National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and Lupus Europe. NRAS has a full decade of experience in dealing with patients who have RA and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Furthermore, relationships with carers – both family and medical representatives – are of paramount importance to NRAS. Lupus Europe is the umbrella organization for 23 groups spread throughout 21 countries in Europe – an amazing range of potential valuable experiential input. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals in rheumatology already committed to attending the conference have expressed interest in participation at the patients’ program. The aim is to balance this input by including active patient volunteers that work on a variety of levels, ranging from local to regional. It is expected they will have experience in providing courses/self-help therapy for fellow patients and/or be able to give presentations to health professionals or fellow patients (education). Experience may also include advocacy work at all levels – from committee to chair. Excellence in Rheumatology 2012 is offering a significant step in guidance and help for fellows in their international career. An EiR School Day will be devoted to expertise and training focused on clinical practice in the fields of systemic autoimmunity and arthritis. Each attendee will present their research project and feedback by review and discussion will then follow from expert Faculty members. This fulfills many objectives, including unbiased career advice, technical and academic guidance and support, as well as an opportunity to present novel research at a first-class conference. A maximum of 12 members per school will ensure that the topics will receive the attention they deserve. However, applications must be prompt as attendance is therefore limited. There is aid for participants of both the patients’ program and the schools under certain circumstances. Free registration and accommodation, as well as travel support for potential scholars from developing/emerging countries is available. For successful applicants from other countries, there is free registration. Also, a number of bursaries for patient participation from outside Spain are available. If there is such a thing as a perfect balance at an academic conference, then surely Excellence in Rheumatology will achieve this concept. The stage is set for a healthy equilibrium between academic excellence and patient input, research and clinical application, new ideas and conventional wisdom, not to mention peer-to-peer interactions. Come and see for yourself. Madrid 2012 is making the necessary adjustments to get the balance right." @default.
