- W21362912 abstract "Published in abstract only Recent studies on the density and food-intake of juvenile plaice in the western Wadden Sea have revealed the importance of young plaice as consumers of the high benthic invertebrate production on the intertidal mud-flats. Dense populations of O-, I- and II-group plaice are estimated to consume as much as half the amount of invertebrate food available to birds and fishes between March and July. From June onwards, after this period of heavy predation, juvenile plaice leave the intertidal zone in order of size - larger fish first - although the invertebrate macro-benthos has not even reached its maximum biomass. One of the possible explanations for this rapid leave deals with the effects of increasing water-temperature on the energy balance of the rapidly growing young plaice, which in experiments showed optimal growth at lower temperatures. On basis of average and rough field data on gastric digestion and stomach-contents of the plaice, together with experimental data on the relationship between temperature, fish-size and rate of digestion, the consumption by O-, I- and II-group plaice in the intertidal zone from March to September was estimated. On the other hand, laboratory data on oxygen consumption, and some generally accepted relationships between fish-size, temperature and respiration lead to curves of maximum and minimum respiration values for juvenile plaice during their stay in the intertidal zone and hence, to estimates on the average biomass respired. A comparison of the results shows how increasing summer-temperatures in the intertidal zone are unfavourable for especially the larger plaice, since their energy available for growth decreases due to increasing respiration. The gradual shift of these larger plaice towards the deeper and colder water of the North Sea coastal zone might, therefore, be explained in terms of the “maximum power hypothesis”, as it obviously leads to maximum possible growth in the juvenile plaice populations." @default.
