- W2136734853 abstract "The treatment performance of the sewage treatment oxidation pond of a Nigerian University was assessed in terms of pH, electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD ) and nutrient removal from 5 the influent. These parameters were simultaneously monitored in the receiving stream, influent and effluents. Significant pollution of the receiving stream was indicated for BOD , nitrate, phosphate, suspended solids and 5 pH. The levels of these parameters in the sewage effluent exceeded the Nigerian Federal Environmental Protection Agency tolerance limits for the effluents to be discharged through public sewers into a stream. In addition, the levels of some trace metals: Pb, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cd were also determined in the influent, effluent of the oxidation pond and the receiving stream. High mean levels of Pb, Zn and Fe were observed in th e receiving stream and exceeded the WHO guideline levels for drinking water and for protection of aquati c ecosystem. This unfortunately, may affect the 'health' of the aquatic ecosystem in the receiving stream and the health of the rural dwellers who use the stream water directly for domestic purposes without treatment." @default.
