- W2137148413 abstract "(deschooling, freeschooling, community education and non-formal education) the 1980s have been a time of deep recession. Britain we are now witnessing a dramatic attempt by central government to preserve the school and traditional knowledge forms. Instead of the kind of pluralism, diversity and regional and local autonomy which theorists like Bell (1976), Naisbitt (1984), Stonier (1983) and Toffler (1980) see as natural elements of post-industrial society, we have an attempt to reassert the power of the centre over the periphery and to impose uniformity through a 'national' curriculum. Against this background these three books are of great interest. They all link to the recent past of educational reform; they all highlight some key problems of education in post-industrial society; and they all have some positive proposals for the future. While the government is making schooling the latest nationalised industry (no flotation is, at present, promised), these writers are seeking, and developing, alternatives in education. Of the three-Holt, Meighan and Grant-it is Holt who is most identified with alternative movements, and who is best known. All of them argue the limitations of schools, and Holt and Grant between them create a catalogue of complaints. In most large schools the children are tracked, i.e. the college track, the business track, the vocational track... Once put in a track, few children ever escape from" @default.
