- W2137932001 abstract "OBJECTIVE: Unequally sized embryos are considered as embryos with a lower implantation potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the equality in odd cell stage embryos using the blastomere volume as a new morphological characteristic. DESIGN: Prospective study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 2008 embryos (with less than 10% fragmentation) of IVF/ICSI patients younger than 36 years (458 single embryo transfer cycles on day 3) were included (n day 2 = 1123; n day 3 = 865). The volume of the fertilized oocyte and the blastomere volumes on day 2 and day 3 were measured using the FertiMorph system (Image House, Copenhagen, Denmark). Since theoretically odd cell-stage embryos (3-, 5-, 6- and 7 cell) are unequally sized, the smallest and largest blastomeres were defined for each individual embryo. A comparison was made for each odd cell stage between the “small” blastomere population and the “large” blastomere population. Mann-Whitney U tests were used with a significance level of 0.003 (after correction for multiple comparisons). RESULTS: Significant differences (p<0.0001) were found between the “small” and “large” blastomere population of 3-, 5-, 6- and 7 cell stage embryos.Tabled 1Median volume of small and large blastomere population of odd cell stagesCell stageSmall blastomere populationLarge blastomere populationp- value3 cell day 2185 087314 450<0.00015 cell day 299 520163 588<0.00015 cell day 394 529147 908<0.00016 cell day 393 683148 241<0.00017 cell day 387 441143 330<0.0001 Open table in a new tab CONCLUSION: This study shows that odd cell stages embryos have unequally sized blastomeres confirming the theoretical cleavage model. This indicates that selection based on equality of blastomeres has to be adapted to the developmental stage of the embryos." @default.
