- W2138203463 abstract "Substance misuse is a national problem for young adults in college, with binge drinking and prescription abuse rates rising exponentially. Twenty-two percent of full-time college students are current illicit drug users, 39.1 percent are binge drinkers, and 13.6 percent met criteria as heavy drinkers (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2012). Twenty-five percent meet diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders (compared with 8.5 percent in the general population), and yet 37 percent of college students fear seeking help because of social stigma (Bell et al., 2009). Substance abuse during this stage may have a wide array of particularly grave consequences, including a shift to dependence or initiation into so-called hard drugs (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2011). In the field of substance abuse, there is growing recognition that young adults shift from parents to peers as primary influences in emerging adulthood, peer support is critical for young people in recovery, and college cultures may be hostile to recovery pursuits (for example, because of stigma, increased substance availability, academic stressors, and norms including partying as an expectation) (Grahovac, Holleran Steiker, Sammons, & Millichamp, 2011; Holleran Steiker & Grahovac, 2014). Whether young people get sober and come to college trying to stay sober or they realize their need to get sober while on a college campus, students often have to navigate the university environment without supportive, substance-free social networks (Harris, Baker, & Cleveland, 2010; Perron et al., 2011)." @default.
