- W2138350041 abstract "Abstract A thermoefficient mutant (rct/42 + mutant) characterized by its reproductive capacity at 42°C was isolated from the wild-type (rct/42 − ) Japanese B encephalitis (JBE) virus. For the rct/42 + mutant, the EOT values [EOT is the ratio TCD 50 /ml (36°):TCD 50 /ml (41°)] ranged between 10 −2.5 and 10 −3.3 . A striking difference was noted between the rct/42 + mutant and rct/42 − virus, for with the latter the EOT was in the range of 10 1.3 to 10 1.7 . The rate of thermal inactivation of free virus particles of the rct/42 + mutant was the same as that of rct/42 − virus. There were marked differences in plaque formation on porcine kidney stable cells at 36° after 7 days of incubation: plaques produced by rct/42 + virus were minute and usually uncountable, whereas rct/42 − was produced plaques 4–6 mm in diameter. The intracerebral titer of the rct/42 + mutant for young adult mice was nearly the same as the tissue culture titer obtained at 41°. The virulence of the rct/42 + mutant for young adult mice following intranasal inoculation was greater than that of rct/42 − virus, but both viruses failed to produce disease by intraperitoneal or subcutaneous routes." @default.
