She presents the story of a principal who becomes principal of an urban high school facing many challenges and of her journey through the issues of caring and power. The case study of Mattie Johnson as she strives to be the caring principal of Division High School is the vehicle for studying the issues related to caring in leadership. After an introduction to caring, including issues of ethics and politics, the case study is presented. The closing chapters deal with the issue of the relationship of caring and power and considerations for school leadership. In the Introduction, Sernak tells us how she came to write this story about caring and power, of her theoretical foundations for caring greatly based on the work of Nel Noddings and of feminist standpoint theorists including S. Harding, S. Krieger and K. Wieler. In the first chapter Sernak talks of her first encounter with Mattie Johnson who was then an assistant principal when she was a graduate research assistant, she tells of her awareness of being cared for by Mattie's warmth and sensitivity. She then teaches us about what caring is, critiques an ethic of caring and introduces the politics of care. Chapters three to eight are one case study which includes the changes to Division High School and Mattie's leadership of that school. Division High School changes from being the country club high school of the city to having a 98% African American student body with a 50% white faculty, many of whom had been there through those changes. The school became in many ways the least privileged high school in the city. Mattie returns to Division where she taught for many years before leaving to be an assistant principal at another high school in the city. She knows that she faces a very challenging situation but is confident and is very committed to caring. Division faced many of the challenges faced by other contemporary high schools: staff split on racial lines as well as liberal/conservative lines, optimists as well as those who were burned out and disillusioned. The staff had seen many initiatives for improvement and reform rise and wane as school or district leadership continued to change. The leadership of the union saw the need for change including school-based management, but its membership was not close to unanimous in its support. …" @default.
