- W213943677 abstract "The purpose of this study entitled: The cultural value and function of bird and snake symbolism in Archaic and Classical Greece is to assess the significance and meaning of bird and snake symbolism used during the Archaic and Classical periods in Greece. The study examines the contexts in which images of birds and snakes were used during the Archaic and Classical periods in Greece, and explores how these images were appropriated into specific areas of Greek society. It demonstrates that as early as the Iron Age, bird and snake symbolism was used, sometimes in combination with anthropomorphic figures, as part of a sophisticated system of communication which helped to define both Greek cultural values and gender roles. In demonstrating the significance of bird and snake symbolism, a methodology which combines the structuralist approach of functional analysis, semiotics, and Elsner’s (1996) ‘ritual application’ of images will be employed. In addition to images and texts relating to birds and snakes, a range of deities and personifications in Greek myth are also examined, particularly female figures. The symbolism pertaining to birds and snakes - its physical, religious and cultic perception and usage - was established independently of anthropomorphic gods, and was imbued with multivalent and wide-ranging qualities that are evident in both the art and literature produced by and for Greek society. The relationship between bird and snake attribution and symbolism provides particular insight into the nature of sacred animals, the development of Greek deities and the development of other cultural values. There are, in addition, some key questions that this study considers with regards to the cultural expression and value of bird and snake symbolism. These are: does the evidence reveal the degree of ‘independence’ of the animals’ power? What are the ‘modes of power’ of the animals, and what do these modes reveal about the symbolism? What is the significance of the anthropomorphic form- what happens when animal symbols meet the human image? And, most importantly, why do birds and snakes (as well as other animals) feature so prominently? In particular, the concepts of ‘image-as-epithet’ and the functional ‘perpetuity’ of the material and literary images are examined within the specific categories of cultural value that are argued to be manifest in the evidence. These functional categories are: decorative; esoteric; religious; and social, and they include an array of significant expressions in ancient Greek society including aesthetic narrative, healing, prophecy, magic, epiphanies, attributes and governance of deities, cultic practices, gender representation and other cultural mores." @default.
