- W2139532688 abstract "It is admittedly a strange and at first sight absurd proposition to write a history according to an idea of how world events must develop if they are to conform to certain rational ends; it would seem that only a novel could result from such premises. Yet if it may be assumed that nature does not work without a plan and purposeful end, even amidst the arbitrary play of human freedom, this idea might nevertheless prove useful. In the fall of 1888, back home in Massachusetts after a house hunt in Manhattan, William Dean Howells took a moment to record his foul mood in a letter to Henry James. He had fallen out of humor with America. While he made some exceptions for New York City (“at the bottom of our wicked hearts,” Howells wrote, counting his family among the wicked, “we all like New York”), American society had come to seem like “the most grotesquely illogical thing under the sun” (Life 417). He would soon be attending socialist meetings in New York, spurred by his sense that only thoroughgoing socioeconomic transformation could prevent civilization from coming to a bad end: “After fifty years of optimistic content with ‘civilization’ and its ability to come out all right in the end,” he confided, “I now abhor it, and feel that it is coming out all wrong in the end, unless it bases itself anew on a real equality” (417)." @default.
