- W2139629766 abstract "The promotion ofthe use of seasonal to interannual climate infor-mation by U.S. government and international agencieshas increased the number of studies that address theuse of forecasts. This work has largely been applica-tions oriented. These studies seek to identify the cur-rent and potential patterns of forecast use, theintegration of forecasts into decision making, and themost appropriate ways to communicate informationto various groups. Much of this work has rested onmodels that calculate the influence of forecasts on dif-ferent socioeconomic activities in various societalcontexts (Stern and Easterling 1999). In addition, em-pirical research has complemented these modelingstudies by examining concrete patterns of forecast per-ception and communication and, in some cases, offorecast use as well. Numerous factors have been iden-tified that influence perception, communication, interpretation, and use of forecasts [see Stern andEasterling (1999) for a recent review of climate fore-cast applications studies]. Our study of the fishery sectorin five Peruvian ports during the 1997/98 El Nino con-curs with earlier studies that indicate thatsubpopulations differ significantly in their use of thisinformation; it also supports the long-established claimthat perceived accuracy influences forecast use. However, our study suggests that the timing of fore castdissemination, sectoral sensitivity, and socioeconomicvariables influence forecast use in ways different fromthose commonly presented in modeling studies and in" @default.
