- W2140073870 abstract "SummaryDespite the wide availability and extensive use of anticoccidial drugs it has not proved possible to eradicate coccidiosis, and eimerian parasites are still prevalent in poultry flocks. The occurrence of drug-resistance, and the likelihood that few new drugs will be introduced, has thrown doubt on whether chemotherapy will remain the principal means of controlling the disease. It is possible to vaccinate chickens with live, virulent parasites but this has several disadvantages. Improved vaccines, whether based on attenuated parasites or recombinant DNA technology, are seen to offer the best alternative to the use of drugs. The possible integration of chemotherapeutic and immunological methods of control should also be considered (Jeffers, 1986). In any case, strategies for the control of coccidiosis should be based upon a sound knowledge of the epizootiology of Eimeria spp in poultry flocks. Better understanding of the biology of the parasites, the mode of action of drugs, and the mechanisms of immunity, should lead to improved methods for the control of coccidiosis in chickens." @default.
