- W2140239102 abstract "Formation of macropores such as desiccation cracks, vegetation root penetrations, and rodent and worm holes trigger macropore flow in earthen landfill covers. Commonly used water balance models that simulate percolation through earthen landfill cover are based on Richards' Equation that simulates micropore flow. These models are not designed to simulate flow through macropores where the liquid flow is predominantly downward, similar to flow in a conduit. Macropore flow is relatively challenging to model. The Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) is a 1-D water balance model that simulates micropore flow using Richard's equation and macropore flow using Poiseuille's law. Two controlled irrigation tests were performed to evaluate the macropore flow through earthen landfill cover. The first irrigation test was performed before the formation of macropore and the second irrigation test was performed after the formation of macropores. Numerical simulations using one of the commonly used water balance model UNSAT-H was able to simulate the micropore flow during the first irrigation test. However, UNSAT- H could not capture the macropore flow during the second irrigation test. RZWQM was able to simulate the flow through micropore as well as flow through macropore." @default.
