It consumes a good portion of my time; each quarter I spend approximately 120 hours in classroom teaching and 50 hours in supervising interns, including in-class observations, conferences, and travel time. But I enjoy my role as a university supervisor. Being located in the South, I appreciate the lush scenery, bright sunshine, and warm temperatures as I drive to the various schools, and I look forward to meeting faculty and students. The first year that I observed the interns I was confident that my students were well prepared. For I not only supervised the interns, but I also worked with them in their preservice English Education classes. By the time they were ready for their internship, I knew these students well. I was convinced that they realized the futility of diagramming sentences and spending day after day and week after week memorizing grammar rules and working on drills, that they were committed to teaching writing as a process, and that they would integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills into their daily lesson plans. For I had seen their demonstration lessons in the classroom; they were creative and exciting, and they focused on learning through active participation and discovery. I had listened to their reports and discussions as they completed their required observation hours in the schools. We talked about what they had learned, and they noted not only what worked well but also what they would like to change. Although they were sometimes excited, they were often discouraged by what they saw in the high school classrooms. They recognized the conflict between theory and practice and were anxious to have an opportunity to incorporate what they had been learning at the university into a real classroom setting.
